This is long, so please just bear with me. I really need some advice.

Let me start out by saying, that a month ago, we had five, healthy, happy cats. I live with my mom in a small neighborhood, free of crime, and not a lot of traffic. A few months ago, new neighbors moved in across the street. I don’t want to sound rude, but they were very trashy. They have garbage piling up outside their backdoor, they don’t mow their grass, there’s probably four adults and four children living there. They’re loud and drive crappy cars. This doesn’t bother me, and I don’t mean to judge, but I’m pretty upset here. Anyways, my boyfriend and I went to the beach for five days and came back on July 15th. The day after we got back, we found Chester, our five year old yellow tabby, no health problems and perfectly healthy, just dead beside our front porch beside a bush. He had a slit to his mouth and cheek, with a little blood from that. He was bloated, being in the sun for a few hours before we found him. He had no other markings. We assumed he had gotten hit in the road, suffered internal bleeding, and dragged himself into the yard, and died. We found no blood in the street, nor in the place he died or around it. I suspected the neighbors then, but tried to be logical and put two and two together. We burried him under a maple tree in our yard, said our goodbyes, and began the long journey of accepting the death of a beloved pet.

About two in a half weeks later, just today, around 1 pm, my boyfriend arrived at my house. He told me Snowie was dead, at the end of our driveway. I went outside, and sure enough, she was. She was on the very edge of the road, soaking wet, and freezing cold. It was about 90 outside today, and while it rained early this morning (around 5), it is now very sunny, warm, and very hot. She was found in the sun, but yet she was soaking wet. No blood, no markings on her at all, just soaking wet and cold, despite being in direct sunlight. Our neighbors, whom we suspect, have two pools in their backyard. She had not been run over, she had not been hit.

My mom and boyfriend are on their way to Wythville, Va right now. There is a lab there that does autopsy’s for animals. We want to get to the bottom of this. I’m hoping the deaths are natural causes, of course. I want that piece of mind. We got pictures of her, the place she was found, pictures of the pool in the backyard (in case they take it down) and pictures of their cars in the driveway, showing that they were there at the time. Just in case, as evidence if we need it. My question is, what happens now? Is this just us being paranoid, or do I have a real reason to suspect these people we don’t know? I have three cats remaining, plus two dogs that have a big fenced in yard outside, but they go in and out as they please. Until we find out what’s going on, we’re keeping the animals inside. What should I do? Should I worry? Should I get more evidence? How? What steps do I need to take that, if she was drowned, to convict them?
Any advice or words to help would be greatly appriciated… thank you so much.

My boyfriend has been getting eaten alive every night and he has about 25 large mosquito-looking bites all over his body, whereas I have none.

We know it is not mosquitoes because they always bite me first and I react very badly to mosquito bites. We also know it is not bedbugs because we had them about a year ago and I had a million horrible itchy bites everywhere but he did not react to their bites at all. We don’t think it is fleas because we use frontline on our cats + dog and flea bites tend to be smaller than what he has. We have also ruled out scabies because the bites look nothing like scabies.

He thinks it is black flies, as we have killed 2 things that looked like large black gnats or fruit flies that had blood in them when they were smushed. The other possibility I guess would be bird/rat mites. I think it is rat mites because I haven’t heard of black flies infesting a home before, and also because we recently moved our bedroom to the first floor next to the street (as opposed to the back yard second floor, where it used to be), making our new bedroom closer to any new york city street rats or birds that might be carrying the mites.

So here are my questions:
1. Is this rat/bird mites or is it black flies?
2. How do we get rid of whatever it is?
3. Why am I not affected? I am usually so sensitive and I have always reacted badly to everything – poison ivy, mosquitoes, even products and lotions sometimes. Usually he is the one comple

Trust me, it is not bedbugs again. I have NO bites at all and I always react very badly to their bites, plus we have none of the usual signs that they are here. We got rid of them VERY thoroughly. Also, don’t bedbugs kind of bite in lines/clusters? His bites are all over. Though I guess I would have to agree with you, if I wasn’t the one sleeping next to him every night I would definitely think that it was bedbugs.

I clean almost obsessively so I doubt that laundering the sheets and such will make a difference since I already do it so often, but I’ll try doing that again today.

Tips to Keep Dogs and Cats Safe in Summertime

Taking extra care of your pets during the hot summer months is crucial to keeping them healthy. For dogs with thin or short fur, pet sun block is a great solution to prevent sunburn. In the summertime, insects are actually more of a threat for dogs and cats then they are for children. Be sure to give your pets plenty of water, as everyone, kids, adults and pets, all need plenty of water to combat the intense heat of summer.

Animals with thin coats are at high risk of sunburn at all times, but even dogs with thick fur can suffer from sunburn. It’s easy to see that bristling coat of fur shining in the sun and think it means that our pet’s skin is safe. All pets are susceptible to burning on the tips of their ears and their noses. Another trouble spot is the abdomen. Many dogs and cats like to lie on their backs letting their stomachs take in the warmth of the sun (yes, dogs and cats sunbathe too.). Lying on their backs, while comfortable, puts pets at significant risk of sunburn. Lotions designed just for dogs and cats can be found online or at stores. If you have trouble finding what you need ask your veterinarian. Be especially careful in applying these lotions as pets have a much harder time washing out their eyes if the lotion gets in them.
During the summer months, bugs can be a major problem for animals. Allergic reactions to bees and fire ants can be fatal to your dog or cat if the vet is not visited immediately. The first step is to use flea and tick medication. It is also important to use heart worm meds because a mosquito can carry the parasite to your dog or cat. Once this is taken care of keep a close eye out for anomalies. If you notice scabs on the animal you should check closely that the medication is working.

Fleas and ticks can lead to constant scratching, to the extent that patches on your animal’s body could be rubbed raw. This is tame when compared with what bees and fire ants can do to your dog or cat. Getting frisky with those buzzing bees can lead to bad stings on the nose and head of your pet. That is a serious matter itself; however, if your pet is allergic it can be fatal.

Another potentially fatal situation for your dog or cat in the summertime involves fire ants. A sleeping dog or cat can be easy prey for these red pests. These ants will actually scatter themselves over your pet’s stomach and synchronize their patterns of stinging. This can cause immense pain. If this is occurs, hose down your pet and bring it to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Prevention measures should solve most problems, but be sure to keep your eyes open just in case.
Swimming is something that most dogs will readily do. Cats, while they tend to avoid the water, could fall in by accident at any moment. The threat with water is not that the pets will not know how to swim, as most will know what to do instinctively. The main issue is how the animal will get out of the water after it has entered. Pool-sides and the edges of boats can be very difficult for a pet to climb onto while also staying afloat. If your dog or cat panics upon entering the water it may find it impossible to get out.

To prevent this from happening, give your animal some basic lessons. Have your dog or cat go into the water and help lead it to the stairs or ramp to get out of the water. This training will make it easier for your dog or cat if it falls in by accident at any point.
Dehydration is a constant issue for animals as well. The extra heat will force your pet to consume substantially larger amounts of water in the summertime. There is a great temptation to give your dog or cat ice cold water. It is a good idea to avoid this and stick to room temperature liquids. If the water is too cold the animal is likely to end up vomiting bile and becoming even more dehydrated. This becomes especially likely if your pet drinks fast, which happens very often during the hot summer months. The occasional ice-cube or frozen treat can be helpful to help your dehydrated pet cool down.
During the summer, staying cool is the greatest challenge of all. Never leave your pet in a parked car with the windows closed. In less then ten minutes that car can get up around 120 degrees. Temperatures that high could kill your animal. If you must leave a pet unattended in your vehicle park it in the shade, put the windows down and be sure to have water that your pet can drink. Pets with flat faces and/or thick fur are at the highest risk for heat stroke. Try to take your pet out in the cool of the morning or early evening to keep it from overheating. The daytime hours can be too much for your animal.

It is also a good idea to keep track of how the sun shines in your yard. A place that is shaded at one time may be bright in another because of how the sun moves across the sky. Be sure that your dog or cat is resting in the shade as much as possible while outside. At the least make sure that shade is available at all times so that your pet can find relief from the sun. They will know when they are too hot, at least most of the time, be sure to give them ample opportunities to find relief. Excessive panting is one of the earliest signs of heat exhaustion, but if symptoms get to the point of vomiting be sure to get your animal cooled down. One sure fire way to do this is to pour cool water on the dog or cat and work the liquid into its coat. If this does not help, and the animal ends up losing consciousness you should take it to a veterinarian immediately.
Summer is one of the best times to have fun with your pet. Playing a game of fetch that involves your dog jumping into a body of water can be very fun. Watching your cat chase after butterflies can be entertaining as well. However, if you want to enjoy these pastimes you need to be sure to take care of your animal in the summer heat. When the proper precautions are taken your pets have a great chance of keeping cool and staying safe. Do you put your pet bowls in the dishwasher with all the other plates and stuff or is that just gross? I tend to wash the pet bowls by hand (we have a dog and two cats) but it’s a bit laborious. Our dishwasher runs at 60 degrees celsius (140 fahrenheit).

My kitten has 2 beanie babies she carries around, but every morning I find 1 of them floating in dog’s water bowl….along with anything else she feels is funny to put in there. If i dump out the bowl at night she sits and yells about it……I can’t win! I’m just trying to be 1 step smarter than a 8 mth old kitten!

I’ve had my dog for 2 months now. I adopted him and he’s 3 years old.
He stopped wanting to eat out of his bowls a while back so I started scrubbing them out with dish soap instead of just rinsing after he was done eating. That worked for a while, but now it doesn’t matter. He tips the bowl over and eats off the floor. If I use his tip-proof bowl, he doesn’t eat and just leaves it for my cats to eat.
But if I pour his food from the bowl to the floor, he’s happy. I tried giving him a clean, fresh human bowl from my cupboard this morning and he wouldn’t teat until he had tipped it over.
If he didn’t eat so readily from the floor, I would worry it was his food he didn’t like.
Has anyone else ever experienced something like this?

I have 2 small dogs and 2 cats. You see, the dogs raid the cat food bowl and then eat their own food once the cats’ is all gone. I figure, why keep trying to discipline the dogs? They’re pretty sneaky about it now, and i’m always having to give the cats more food. Is there anything wrong with dogs eating cat food, or cats eating dog food?

I have 2 cats and a dog. Now we keep the litter box and food bowls in the laundry room – off limits to the dog, and the food is on a table off the ground – to avoid tempting the dog.
We are moving to a house with a laundry closet – no extra space and I don’t know where to keep their stuff away from the dog, and out of the view of guests.
Where do you keep your cat’s food, and litter box?

It was laying on my front porch this afternoon, and when it saw me it came to the glass and started meowing. My dog is really aggressive toward other animals, so he started growling and barking at it through the glass, the cat was unfazed. It is really thin, so I took it some dog food and water (I read later that you shouldn’t give cats dog food, so I gave it some raw tuna fish and it ate an entire can’s worth).

I’m going to get it checked for a microchip, but I really don’t think someone would have it microchipped and not neutered. It is so friendly I can’t imagine its been living on its own for long. When I go outside, it follows me everywhere, I can’t take a step without it following, and when I go back inside it tries to squeeze in between my feet to get in the house.

It hung around all day and slept underneath my car, but as it started getting dark I decided to put it in my backyard. It kept walking along the rock waterfall that runs across the back of my pool, and it would lean in over the water. At around 9:30 pm, I was in my backyard with it trying to decide where I should put it and all of a sudden another cat jumped over my fence. They meowed at each other, but the other cat was scared of me and it ran off to the side of my house. I decided to put my stray in the driveway, because it wouldn’t stay away from the water. The other cat started meowing from my front yard then ran to my neighbor’s yard. I didn’t get a very good look at it, but it was the exact same size as my stray (tiny). My neighbors’ cats’ are all bigger and kept inside, especially at night.

Sorry for the long-winded backstory, these are my questions:

I have never seen unneutered stray animals without collars running around in the area where I live, is it possible someone dumped these cats in my neighborhood? Maybe thinking a family would take them in and take care of them?

They meowed at each other from a distance and just kind of stared at each other, like they were curious. Is it safe to assume they will get along and not fight? I’m worried the other cat is an unspayed female and their meowing was some kind of mating call.

Are they going to be safe outside? I live in a neighborhood in the suburbs, but there is some wooded area about a block from my house. Would a possum or raccoon try and attack the cat? And would the cat be able to get away?

Is it better to leave my driveway light on to keep other animals away? It can still hide under my car or in some plants along the fence that aren’t lit up.

I found a no kill shelter in the Houston area called Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, I’m going to call tomorrow and see if they can take care of it. Thanks in advance for the help, I don’t know anything about cats or how to take care of them!
