Critiques on the introduction to my short story?

I’m writing a story on an abusive relationship between a husband and wife, but as of now, I only have the introduction (sorry guys, nothing interesting yet). I know I tend to make my introductions too long and too boring, so I’m wondering if I’m doing it again. I’ve written up to the point where the "action" will start in the next few sentences. So, what do you think? Comments?

(P.S. G, this is the story I made reference to in one of my previous questions. I think your ability to paint a picture for the readers would be great in this piece. Let me know if you’re interested in working on this one with me, so I can finish it up and hand it off to you).

(No title yet…)

“Good evening, radio listeners,” I hear a fast, deep voice say from the car radio. “Right now, the time is 5:06 and it’s currently 82°F in Trenton— still warm enough for a quick dip in the pool. For those on their way home from work, there’s an accident at—” I click the radio off, concluding his traffic report before the end of his sentence. I turn my key toward me, the car shuts off and I remove the key from the ignition. Usually, I’m rushing to make it inside before five o’clock, but there’s no use today; I’m already six minutes late. I sit there for a moment, running my fingers over the leather seats, as I relish in my last seconds of serene solitude. It isn’t much, but it’s enough to prepare myself for what’s next.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” I say with a sigh, as I open the car door and close it behind me. On my way to the front porch, I make a pit stop at the mailbox and pick up letters from the credit card companies. They all want one thing— an envelope holding a check marked out to their company —but today just isn’t the day. I close the mailbox, lay down the red flag and make my way up the front lawn— another “no-no,” but it doesn’t matter anymore.

“Good evening, Mrs. Graham,” yells a voice from across the street. “How was your day at work?”

I turn around to see my twelve-year-old neighbor, Porter, sitting on his bike, as he kicks the break down. He’s a sweet boy— never did anything wrong —but my damper mood leaves me longing for silence, isolation.

“Hi, Porter; my day at work was great, thank you. I see you bought yourself that bike you’ve been looking at. My,” I pause, as I examine the bike beneath the boy with the wide eyes and wider smile. “It surely is a great bike.”

“I know, I know! I’m so happy that I finally saved enough money from cutting lawns and walking dogs. My mom wants me back by six, so I’ll see you later, Mrs. Graham.”

I sweep my hair from my eyes to get a better look at the boy who found utopia in the mere purchase on a new bike, “You better hurry up,” I reply. “You don’t want to make Mrs. Anderson upset now.” He nods his head and we exchange our goodbyes before I begin rummaging through my purse for my house key. By now, the clock reads 5:10— ten minutes late.

After locating my house key, I scurry my way up the stairs to the front porch. I open the screechy screen door and lean my head against the wooden door. Nothing; not a single sound. Despite hesitation, I follow through with normal routine: place the key in the keyhole, turn it to the right, do the same for the deadbolt, turn the knob and let myself inside. As I take my small steps into the house, I hold my breath and listen closely for him. Again, nothing; not a single sound. Relieved, I make my way to the living room and place my purse on the coffee table— my third “no-no” for the day. I take a seat on the couch and begin to unwind. I’m home, I’m late, no consequences. A miracle? Perhaps. I close my restless eyes, pull my tense arms behind my head and being to lose touch with my surroundings.

“How was your day, honey?” I hear in the near distance. I rub my eyes, yawn and peer at the man standing before me: Nathan.

Proper Pool Care ? Part 1

Proper Pool Care ? Part 1

Caring for a pool can be difficult to do. The instructions for a child’s pool are simple: “Fill with water from a hose and enjoy.” However, most pools require that you pay special attention to PH, filter types, algae color and extermination, chlorine levels, water hardness, and more. That is especially true for built in pools. It is essential, therefore, that you are familiar with the processes.

It is very important to maintain the correct PH level. Just as your body needs to have the proper PH level to survive, your pool needs the proper PH so that it will be safe for swimming. The PH of your pool is its level of acidity. Too much acid will make the pool toxic. A change in balance the other way will be harmful too – too little acid will also cause toxicity. The PH of your pool must be maintained at safe levels, so check it twice a month during the summer and monthly during the winter. Check your pool carefully in the spring and winter months when it has rained, because this can add acid to your pool.

You can get a kit to help monitor the PH if you’d like to do it yourself. Usually these tests include a small bottle of reagent and a tube-shaped container. Scoop some water from the pool into the tube, add a few drops of reagent, and shake. The reagent will cause the water to change in color from orange to purple or somewhere in-between. You can find the proper PH level on the side of the box, and safe is normally between 7.4 and 7.6. You can use the box to compare the color of the pool water to be sure you have the proper PH level. If you find the PH in your pool isn’t safe, you can purchase increaser or decreaser at many stores to bring it back to balance.

The PH level is important, but so is the level of the chlorine. I’m sure you’ve seen a pool taken over by the color green. This is due to the absence of chlorine. This problem is usually corrected by adding a couple of chlorine tablets and a filter that will float around your pool. Maintaining this device is quite simple. Just add a few replacement tablets each week or so. On the other end of the scale, has your pool ever smelled like chlorine? This is due to too much chlorine, high levels of which can be harmful to your skin. With levels this high you should not be in the water.

You will not need to wait for a long time to swim, as chlorine does not last for a long time during the summer. Heat will destroy chlorine quickly, so during the dog days of summer it’s wise to keep extra chlorine tablets in your pool. Chlorine is eaten up by body oils and sun lotions, in addition to anything accidentally dropped into the pool. If you happen to have children, things will surely fall in the water, so just learn to expect it. And it is not difficult to check the level of chlorine; you can purchase a testing kit. Merely fill the vial, add a few drops of your reagent, shake, and compare the color to the chart on the side of the box. During the summer months, chlorine tests will need to be performed every couple of days and once a week or so in cooler months.

PH and chlorine levels need to be monitored, and it is a rather simple procedure. However, it can be costly and time-consuming to remember those important steps: monitor the chlorine levels; test the water; purchase the kits, tablets, and chemicals; and monitor the PH content in the water. This is one of the reasons why having a pool care service is a good idea, especially when you have a nice pool. It may cost the same amount to hire a pool service as it would to go out and buy the products yourself. Hiring a pool service relieves you of the time and effort it takes to own a pool and maintain it yourself. All you have to do is remove the cover and swim.

As a contractor, Mark Agualera is gone for long hours. After a ten hour day, he wants to mingle with his family, not spend 20 minutes taking care of the pool. So he hired a Cameron Park pool cleaning company to take care of his Placerville swimming pool service, leaving him time to take care of his family. Foothill Pool Care takes care of PH and Chlorine levels and allows Mark to relax.

Looking for a Cheaper Pool For Geriatric Dog?

I have a almost 8 year old Lab/ Golden mix who just visited the vet a few days ago, & has another appt on the 17th for surgery, ( she will be 8 on christmas) But the vet says that she has now entered her geriatric years & needs arthritis meds & a pool to swim in. the problem is We cannot find a pool that allows for a ramp on both sides ( inside & out) so she can get in & out ans still have room to swim around a bit. ive looked at pet co & pet smart. cant find what im looking for. she is also going in to have a thyroid & diabetic test( the Geriatric test is what it is all called) they check for everything, & like my vet said, she is certainly old & she now moves slow, but still is happiest when she is swimming she is our baby ( our daughter) & we want to make the rest of the time she has go easy for her, we want to make her happy. she loves to play, just has a harder time with it. Can anyone suggest where i can find a pool ( with in out ramp) so she can still enjoy her life? i Don’t want a 7/8 hundred dollar pool as her surgery & testing is already costing close to 900 dollars. I would rather pay no more then 120 to 200 dollars for one if i had to pay that Much. we may have to have another surgery if the lump that was found turns out to be cancer.. ( not to worry) doc said it can be treated if we catch it early. right now he plans on looking at it on the 17th. yes the Doctor confirmed she has entered her geriatric years.

A Palm Springs Newport Beach Orange County California Swimming Pool Accident Attorney Guide to Swimming Pool and Drowning Prevention and Saving Lives

A Palm Springs Newport Beach Orange County California Swimming Pool Accident Attorney Guide to Swimming Pool and Drowning Prevention and Saving Lives

If you or a member of your family has been seriously injured in a swimming pool accident in La Quinta, Rancho Mirage, Riverside, Newport Beach or Santa Ana, Fullerton or Yorba Linda, or if you’ve lost a loved one in a swimming pool drowning as a result of the negligence of another in Riverside, San Bernardino, Chula Vista, Moreno Valley, Palmdale or El Cajon, you may be wondering what steps you should take to provide care or to seek compensation for your injuries or loss. But more important than that, is getting the medical care you need and quickly.

Whether the swimming pool accident occurred in San Diego, Orange County, Anaheim, Irvine, Newport Beach, the Inland Empire cities like Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Temecula or Palm Springs and Palm Desert, yes, you should contact an attorney before vital evidence is lost, but you may need medical care even more vitally, even if you think you feel fine.

Drownings don’t just occur to kids and they don’t happen just in swimming pools. A very small amount of water can be fatal to a small child. And an adult or a child who has had a near-drowning can still suffer brain damage, respiratory damage or death hours later.

Depending on the research you read, or the ages involved, drowning is from the fourth to the first cause of deaths to children. For children under the age of 14, drowning in swimming pools is the leading cause of death. Other studies put drowning fourth after guns, car accidents and burns for the leading cause of unnatural death of all children. The fact is, more people die in swimming pool drownings than any other type of activity.

A child however can drown in a beer cooler, a fish pond, other water features, Jacuzzi, toilet, water bowl, stream, river, drain and any other place where their head can be in the water.Because of their disproportionate weight of their heads, a toddler can fall into water and find it difficult to lift their head or their body so they can breathe.

A condition not often discussed is near-drowning or dry-drowning. This can occur hours after a person has nearly suffocated in water and with a build-up of water in their lungs, they can die after walking around and talking and performing other activities.

For every child that drowns, five are left with permanent brain damage or damage to their respiratory system.

So what can be done to prevent drownings? Vigilance is the word, whenever children are around water. Keep gates to pools closed and locked, and whenever possible keep covers on pools. Many people are unaware of electronic splash sensors that can be employed to sound an alarm whenever a splash is detected. And take a CPR course or take a refresher course.

Never try to rescue someone if it would endanger your life. Call for help. If the person is not breathing but has a pulse, perform the Heimlich maneuver first and quickly to clear the airway (though some would say skip this step and proceed to the next) and then begin mouth to mouth breathing immediately. If the person starts to breathe again, they will likely need to vomit. Place the person on their side with their head lower than their torso so the airway can be cleared. If there is no pulse, you should still perform CPR. Keep the person warm. Call 911 at your earliest possible moment. And if a person has nearly drowned take them to an emergency room even if they appear to have completely recovered.

Should I feel bad for my dog?

My year old pup, she seems like she comes in side and she is sad because I have to leave her outside all day (10 hours) or when not home. My yard is about 100ft by 120ft with some grass and a pool she steps into when she gets hot, but nothing to look at, all walled in. What are some things I can make or get so she can have more fun by her self? She has a few toys already and bones here and there. She is a VERY VERY active Queensland Heeler (fyi, why I need to leave her outside)
Yeah, your right i should of just left her at the dog pound.
and its not my house to leave her in side
