Stop Dog from Barking- Puppies and Older Dogs

Stop Dog from Barking- Puppies and Older Dogs

Older dogs and puppies are different. Understanding this can help you spot what all the noise is about.

Older dogs

Just like people older dogs have health issues. Arthritis pain, feeling achy in cold weather, sensitivity to cold/heat/draughts and simply less tolerant and more irritable. This can cause barking at events that didn’t bother them before such as other dogs, cars, trucks or planes. Vision and/or hearing can add to the problems by causing the dog to be startled. Some older dogs have bitten people they have been friendly with because they were startled. Afterwards they are often ashamed.

As hearing goes, he may often bark first and ask questions later on a better safe than sorry principle. Confusion and even dementia can cause sudden barking. If so there are drugs to help.

If he barks at specific things like cars and trucks find a way to not let him see them. Close curtains, build a fence or move the dog to different room. If a dog suddenly starts barking for no obvious reason, check his physical condition and the surroundings. If there’s nothing obvious…go to a vet. Be empathetic…imagine how you would feel if you were the aging dog.

Puppies

Puppies are almost universally adorable but after a few days and nights of a puppy whimpering and barking …it is decidedly not so cute. You must resolve puppy barking as it leads to adult barking.

If a puppy has been taken from their mother early, he will often bark when left alone. But several ideas have been used successfully to calm puppies: put a blanket or toy around the puppy that was used by the litter, play the radio on low, or put a small ticking clock in his bed (assumed to remind the puppy of his mum’s heartbeat) or even something unwashed of yours can often work as a comforter.

A method of preventing a lonely puppy becoming an adult barker is to allow him to spend time alone while he’s still a puppy. This can be very hard for people to do – as who doesn’t feel the need to have the cute puppy at their side…but try and avoid this constant attention…train them to be independent with this alone time. Give him toys to play with alone. The key is not to spend every second with your dog, in a way it’s training yourself (and him) to do your own thing. And relax a well-trained, well-behaved dog will still need and love you.

Give your dog a bed immediately (and not your bed) and walk him to it every night. This will pay off massively. It gives him his own place to sleep (or hide) but more importantly it gives YOU your own bed with no massive hound demanding your attention every minute! Not to mention no pools of drool to step in or wipe up. Many vets/trainers recommend using a crate rather than a bed however if you don’t travel much, or your dog is well behaved, a pet bed will often do.

Puppies should start training at two months of age -don’t wait. If your puppy barks try turning away and walking out. This will disconnect the link the puppy is trying which is that barking = attention (even if it’s bad attention). You don’t rush to him if he calls you. It may take a few weeks to ingrain that in his brain so keep going…if you give in, in his mind it will be “Hmmm if I just bark long enough and loud enough, I get attention” and that is bad for you.

Do not comfort a dog who is barking. Again by doing this you reinforce that barking = attention. I know I know you feel guilty sometimes but just don’t do it. The habit will be harder to break when you try again.

Is this good enough, it sucks that leap year is every four years, but is it good enough?

My husbands birthday was on February 29th.
It is so sad. His parents are divorced and his mother celebrated his birthday every 4 years and his Dad celebrated it on the 28th. Is this fair that his mother wanted him to be born on that date, he was 10 weeks pre-mature and he gets a birthday every four years?

According to his mother, he will be celebrating his 8th birthday in 4 years, which I think it is sad.
We are getting married in March, and I think it is sad, the way his mother treats him with gifts.

His Dad, is the best. When I am with his brothers and sisters and half sibling and step siblings, who ALL live with his Dad, they make me feel like I am in Cheaper By The Dozen or 19 Kids and Counting or Yours Mine and Ours. They are so loving. Especially his step-mother. She is happy and they are like the best family, ever. They are like normal parents and they give birthday gifts every year, not every four years.

His mother abused him by verbal, his mother just hates him. I am not serious, she even admitted it. She has a good job, she is not poor, she can afford birthday gifts all the time! She had my husband when she was 14, she is 42 years old! She has a good retirement plan and she had rich parents, who gave her a lot of money. She still refuses to care for my husband and love him.

Is that sad ^?

Well this year, he wants to forget about his mother and focus on other things.
Tonight, we will have a special dinner. I will take him and we will eat with nobody, last
night we had a family birthday dinner (and we had a ball/fun time).

And I am getting him 2 puppies. I found both at the pound for free, they were cute, they are different breeds, person at pound said they get along great! They will be 8 weeks old today, and I cant wait!

We will go to church at 2:00 pm, we will change once we are home and pack up. I am taking him to the beach for 5days, where the pound is located. We will leave the house at 4:30 pm. We will go to a fancy restaurant in fancy clothes at 5:30 pm, while on road. We will eat and have a small cake for dessert. Then we will arrive at the beach condo at 9:30 pm and enjoy a few days. The condo is his Dads so no money :) . Road Trip is like 0 and dinner will be 0, but we are fine. I had a budget of ,500. I got a little extra money at work, so I made it his gift. We will open a gift I got him in the condo and have some whine. Then we will change in PJ’s and watch a movie or play video games.
Then we will just enjoy 5 days of the beach, we will walk on the beach, take some photos for the wedding, relax, go mini golfing and go to an arcade. We will also go rock climbing and do fun/romantic/interesting things. We will mostly be inside and enjoy the sun set.

Then on Friday, we will leave. I will tell him we will have time to look at the pound for an hour or two and we go in. We go to see the English Bull Dog (female) and the Puggle (female) and I will tell him it is ours. He will flip out and get them. We will keep on driving and stop at a Pet Smart, buy supplies and all.

Then on Saturday, the next day, at night, he will do a work thing from 3:00 pm- 6:00 pm
Then he will come home at 7:00 pm, then we will have a surprise party.

I spent about ,500 on this WHOLE thing and it was my extra money. I bet he will do something special for my birthday, and we might make a baby on the way.

Please dont call me spoiled. It is our extra wedding money that we had for the budget of the wedding, the extra honey moon money, the extra work money from work, and some money I saved just for him.

I have seen my friends who spent like ,000 on their husband/wifes birthday.
My friend, got her husband an ice sculpture, that would melt in like 3 days or less, for ,000.
Oh, and it was, like a small sculpture.

I just build memories for my husband for his birthday, and make up some years his mother ruined for him!

Given the chance, how would you prefer to aquire a pet?

I used to know someone that can’t have kids. Anyhow, she spent almost 00 buying a dog, having it flown to her from another state. Recently, I found out she just bought another for over 0. They are somewhat "designer" puppies. A Maltipoo and Teacup Morkie. Both spoiled rotten (clothes, toys, numerous vet visits with a sneeze, daycare, special parties (halloween, christmas, birthday…), highest-priced food because it’s vet recommended (she told me they wouldn’t recommend it if it was not necessary She always said it was because she needed a special dog and I would do the same if I didn’t have my kids. I told her not true, I was in her position for some time and didn’t even consider that. My first pup cost me from someone in the paper. The 2nd was from a shelter. Just as sweet, just as smart, not as spoiled. Are they any less of a dog? No, but supposedly her’s is better because she is SO good at caring for it and spent/spends SO much on it.

What’s the most you would pay for a pet?

How do I care for a pregnant dog, a nursing dog, and her puppies?

I just found out my little sister’s dog is pregnate, and I’m the one who’s going to have to take care of it. She is due any day now, and is expecting a not-so-easy delivery because either the litter is huge, or the puppies are huge. We’re really not sure. My parents aren’t going to take her to the vet unless she is in labor and having problems. I’ve already cleaned her bowls, dog house, and toys and removed the other dog from her pen. Other than watching her very carefully, is there anything else I should do?
They’ve said "She’s not coming in the house."
We were expecting her to deliver today since she is now almost a week overdue. Her milk has only come in the back but not in the front. She’s still eating. I don’t get it. What’s taking so long?
She had them today. There are at least seven (it’s hard to count when she’s in front of half of them). She’s fine and they’re fine.

What should we keep our adventurous puppies in?

OK, so we just got a dog from the humane society about a month ago and they told us that she was spayed, but sure enough she had a litter of puppies a couple of weeks ago. Now, this was very unexpected and needless to say we are a little unprepared and tight on resources. The puppies all have their eyes open and are starting to move around a lot. Right now, they are in a wading pool with blankets and a heating pad that the mother can come and go from as she pleases. I was wondering what the next step should be. We still have 2 to 3 weeks before we ween them of course, but until then, what can we put them in, or how should we puppy-proof the area? They are in a warm section of our back room (we live in an apartment). Please help?
